Decision on Ishraque issue will come soon from top level of government: LGRD adviser
When asked how soon a decision might be expected, Asif said, “Very soon.”
The government is likely to reach a swift decision regarding BNP leader Ishraque Hossain's ongoing protest and demand to be sworn in as Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) mayor, Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan said today (19 June).
Speaking to reporters at the secretariat, Adviser Asif confirmed that discussions are already taking place at the highest levels of government. "The situation has evolved to a point where remaining silent is no longer an option."
When asked about Ishraque's self-declared role as Dhaka South mayor, Asif said, "The government is concerned about the issue. This is not something that can be decided unilaterally. Our administration operates through strong coordination. When we speak of maintaining cordial relationships with political parties, it also requires responsible conduct from all sides."
He added, "We are trying to act responsibly on our part. However, with the current deadlock in civic services, it is no longer feasible to remain silent. The matter is being reviewed at the top levels of government, and I will implement whatever decision is reached through those discussions."
When asked how soon a decision might be expected, Asif said, "Very soon."
Earlier, on Wednesday, Adviser Asif had clarified that there is no legal scope for Ishraque to be sworn in as mayor since the tenure of the city corporation has already ended.
"Sitting in the mayor's chair in this manner is legally an offense," he said.
Separately, Asif also addressed concerns over the dengue situation.
"We are seriously concerned at the highest levels. The secretary of the Local Government Division has held multiple meetings on the issue. The city corporations are aware and active. We're facing some challenges in the DSCC area, and regular activities are being naturally disrupted," he said.
"Still, we're trying our best to ensure that civic services continue, even if it means operating externally where necessary," Asif added.
