Top-listed criminal shot dead in front of hospital in Old Dhaka
Tariq Saif Mamun was scheduled to appear at a case hearing today, says an official.
A top-listed criminal was shot dead in front of the gate of Dhaka National Medical Institute Hospital in Old Dhaka this morning (10 November).
Tariq Saif Mamun, 55, a resident of Lakshmipur Sadar upazila, was rescued in a critical condition and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead, Inspector Md Faruk, in charge of the DMCH police outpost, told The Business Standard.
The incident took place at around 10:30am when assailants opened fire on the unidentified man from close range.
Mallik Ahsan Uddin Sami, deputy commissioner of the Lalbagh Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said Mamun was a top-listed criminal.
When asked about the specific cases and the number of charges filed against him, Ahsan said the details are yet to be confirmed, but Mamun was scheduled to appear at a case hearing today.
Ahsan added, "The person killed in the shooting is top-terrorist Mamun. He is not a businessman. He is Mamun of the Emon-Mamun group."
According to police information, the Dhaka underground terrorist group Emon-Mamun is involved in the murder of Dhallywood hero Sohel Chowdhury and the murder of former Army chief general (retd) Aziz Ahmed's brother Tipu Ahmed. Emon of this group is currently absconding. Mamun went to appear in the case today."
Another police source corroborated the fact that Mamun was accused in the Sohel Chowdhury murder case.
Yasin, sub-inspector of Kotwali Police Station, who was on duty at the time of the shooting, told TBS, "Hearing the sound of gunfire, I rushed to the front of the hospital and saw a man lying on the ground with gunshot wounds. He was shot from very close range."
An eyewitness named Apon told TBS that two men came to the entrance of Dhaka National Medical Institute Hospital and shot the victim from behind.
"After firing several rounds, the man collapsed to the ground. The attackers then fled the scene on a motorcycle," he added.
The victim's cousin, Hafiz, said, "My cousin was an ordinary man. I have no idea who killed him or why. He was not involved in any political activities."
