Eleven fishermen have been rescued and eight others remain missing after a fishing trawler sank off the Chattogram coast in the Bay of Bengal on Thursday afternoon (7 August).
Bangladesh Coast Guard launched a search operation yesterday (8 August) to locate the missing fishermen after being informed of the incident by the vessel's owner. Another fishing boat near the site of the accident rescued the survivors on Thursday.
Lieutenant Shakib Mehboob, media officer of the Coast Guard East Zone, said, "The sunken trawler's owner, Mohammad Miraj, informed us about the incident yesterday morning. The search for the missing fishermen has been ongoing since then."
"Alongside the Coast Guard, another vessel of the same owner is also taking part in the search operation," he added.
According to the Coast Guard and the vessel's owner, there were 19 fishermen on board when the trawler went down. All the missing fishermen are residents of Noakhali.
Four of them have been identified as Abul Bashar, Jamal Uddin, Md Faruk, and Md Idris.
Miraj told reporters, "The vessel left Chattogram's Fishery Ghat area for deep-sea fishing on Thursday morning. Eleven fishermen were rescued from the sea by another boat, but eight are still missing."
