The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today summoned Dinajpur Municipality Mayor Syed Jahangir Alam for his derogatory comments against a justice over the verdict in a case against BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.

As four SC lawyers filed a petition seeking necessary directives in this regard, a six-member bench of the Appellate Division led by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique passed the order directing him to appear before the court on 24 August.

The court also asked him to show cause asking why he should not be punished for disparaging a judge of the apex court.

Besides, the court asked the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) chairman to immediately remove the YouTube video containing his comments.

Earlier, Syed Jahangir Alam made defamatory remarks on Justice M Enayetur Rahim, a senior judge of the Appellate Division, over a judgement he delivered in a case against Khaleda Zia.
