DU student allegedly hangs himself following threats over old derogatory comment about Prophet on Facebook
Police have recovered the body of Shakil Ahmed from his family home in Manikganj

Police recovered the hanging body of a Dhaka University (DU) student from his family home in Singair Upazila of Manikganj this morning (10 June).
The deceased was identified as Shakil Ahmed, 24, son of Nasir Uddin Ahmed of the Dakkhin Jamsha village and a final year student of the Faculty of Fine Arts at DU.
Singair Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Toufique Azam told Prothom Alo that Shakil had made some derogatory comments about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from his Facebook profile a while ago. An old comment recently resurfaced and went viral.
"Preliminary investigations suggest that he died by suicide," the OC said, adding that a case of unnatural death has been filed.
He said Shakil's body was sent to the morgue of Manikganj Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.
Shakil's cousin Mukta Akter said last night, at around 9pm, several hundred people from South Jamsha and surrounding villages went to Shakil's home and threatened the family over his comment on Facebook. Around 2am, Shakil killed himself in his room, reports Prothom Alo.
According to Singair police and local sources, Shakil had made the comment about seven or eight months ago but later deleted it. However, it resurfaced and went viral on Monday night.
