Conspiracies afoot to derail democracy again: Fakhrul
The BNP founder, late president Ziaur Rahman, laid the foundation for Bangladesh’s development and progress, says Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has warned that conspiracies are once again being hatched to destroy democracy after the July Uprising.
Speaking today (7 November) after offering prayers and paying respects at the grave of Ziaur Rahman on the occasion of National Revolution and Solidarity Day, Fakhrul said the party's founder, late president Ziaur Rahman, laid the foundation for Bangladesh's development and progress.
"National Revolution and Solidarity Day can guide us back to the path of building a truly democratic, prosperous Bangladesh where people's voting and justice rights are ensured," he said, adding that the BNP remains committed to that goal.
Fakhrul was accompanied by senior leaders of the BNP and its affiliated and associated organisations.
The senior BNP leader said Ziaur Rahman ended one-party rule, introduced multiparty democracy, ensured press freedom, upheld the independence of the judiciary and guaranteed people's rights.
"On this day in 1975, patriotic soldiers and citizens of Bangladesh united to foil the conspiracies of domination and freed the country's most popular statesman and the proclaimer of independence, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, from house arrest, entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the state," he added.
That day marked a turning point in Bangladesh's progress, Fakhrul stated.
"In just four years of governance, he brought major reforms to the political and economic systems, formed a judicial council, and introduced a free-market economy."
Fakhrul remarked that this day is significant not just for the BNP, but for all freedom-loving and democracy-seeking people of the country because Ziaur Rahman created the very foundation on which Bangladesh's advancement stands today.
When asked about the Jamaat-e-Islami's proposal to hold talks on the implementation of the July Charter, Fakhrul said, "We have already made our position clear in yesterday's meeting and press release; that is our statement."
