NCP-Jamaat alliance a matter for those parties: BNP's Nazrul
Referring to Jamaat-e-Islami, he said its ideology did not seem to align with that of the NCP
Any potential alliance between the National Citizen Party (NCP) and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami was a matter for those parties to decide, BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan said today (28 December).
"BNP is a democratic party and recognises the right of all political parties to take decisions according to their ideology," he said while speaking to reporters after a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin at the Election Commission Bhaban in Agargaon.
The BNP leader also stated that some NCP leaders had reportedly left the party, disagreeing with its recent stance [on joining the Jamaat-led alliance].
A BNP delegation, led by Nazrul Islam Khan, held the meeting to discuss preparations for the 13th National Parliament election, the referendum, and complications in the nomination process, as the deadline for submitting nomination papers ends on 29 December. The meeting began around 12:30pm.
Referring to Jamaat-e-Islami, he said its ideology did not seem to align with that of the NCP, adding, "However, it is an issue for them to decide."
When asked whether BNP saw any ideological problem in joining hands with the NCP, he said all political parties claim to be patriotic and democratic, but differences in views are natural.
"If we agreed on everything, we would be one party. Then we would not be distinct parties," he said.
Nazrul Islam Khan also commented on Jamaat-e-Islami's planned rally in Dhaka on 3 January, saying it was the responsibility of the Election Commission to ensure that the electoral code of conduct was not violated.
Meanwhile this evening, Jamaat postponed its pre-announced rally on 3 January due to the first-year undergraduate admission tests for the 2025-26 academic session at nine agricultural universities.
