Mahfuj says he will not join NCP after alliance with Jamaat
He added that maintaining his long-standing political position was more important to him than contesting the election as a candidate of the Jamaat-NCP alliance
Interim government's former adviser Mahfuj Alam has said he will not be part of National Citizen Party (NCP) following its decision to join the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance ahead of the national election.
In a Facebook post today (28 December), the former information and broadcasting adviser said, "Under the prevailing circumstances, my respect, affection and friendship for my July comrades will not be erased. But I am not becoming part of this NCP," he wrote.
Rejecting speculation, Mahfuj said it was not true that he had not received a proposal from the Jamaat-NCP alliance.
However, he added that maintaining his long-standing political position was more important to him than contesting the election as a candidate of the Jamaat-NCP alliance from any constituency in Dhaka.
Earlier in the day, NCP Convener Nahid Islam announced that the party had joined the Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance in pursuit of broader political unity ahead of the national polls, stressing that the move does not indicate any ideological alignment with Jamaat.
