Hadi's killers fled to India, admits DMP
Informal communication with Meghalaya police indicates that two middlemen, Putti and Sami, have been arrested, says DMP Additional Police Commissioner SN Md Nazrul Islam.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police has admitted that two men directly involved in the murder of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi have fled to India.
Speaking to the media today (28 December), DMP Additional Police Commissioner (Crime and Operations) SN Md Nazrul Islam said the two accused are Faisal Karim Masud and Md Alamgir Sheikh.
He added that police expect to submit a charge sheet within the next seven to 10 days in the murder case of Sharif Osman Hadi.
He said both were immediately identified on the day of the murder, and multiple law enforcement teams conducted raids in Savar, Hemayetpur, Agargaon, and Narsingdi.
A DMP team even reached Haluaghat in Mymensingh during the investigation, Nazrul added.
According to him, after the killing, Faisal and Alamgir left Dhaka via a CNG-run autorickshaw to Aminbazar, then travelled to Kalamapur in Manikganj before taking a car to Haluaghat.
They crossed the border with the help of intermediaries, eventually reaching Tura in India's Meghalaya state. Informal communication with Meghalaya police indicates that two middlemen, Putti and Sami, have been arrested, he added.
The DMP officer said that so far, 11 people have been arrested in the case. Six have given confessional statements, and four others have testified under Section 164.
Seized items include two foreign pistols used in the murder, 52 rounds of bullets, magazines, knives, the motorcycle used in the killing, a fake number plate, an autorickshaw, and signed cheques worth Tk218 crore linked to 53 bank accounts.
The DMP said those already in custody confirmed that the accused had escaped. While the main suspect remains at large, authorities are pursuing both formal and informal channels with India to bring them back.
On the motive, Detective Branch (DB) chief Shafiqul Islam said political factors may be involved but refrained from disclosing names due to the ongoing investigation.
Earlier, on 12 December, Hadi was critically injured after he was shot in the head in broad daylight in Dhaka's Paltan area.
He was later taken to a hospital in Singapore for advanced treatment, where he died on 18 December.
Hadi's funeral was held 20 December at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad, with hundreds of thousands of people in attendance.
Since his death, supporters of Inqilab Mancha have been holding protests across the country, demanding the swift arrest of those responsible and accountability for alleged negligence by law enforcement agencies.
