BNP candidate fined Tk50,000 in Chattogram for violating election code
It is the first enforcement action taken in Chattogram since the election schedule was announced on 11 December.
A BNP-nominated candidate in Chattogram was fined Tk50,000 today (13 December) for violating the electoral code of conduct after arriving in his constituency with a large vehicle convoy.
It is the first enforcement action taken in Chattogram since the election schedule was announced on 11 December.
The fine was imposed this afternoon on Nazmul Mostafa Amin, BNP candidate for the Chattogram-15 (Satkania-Lohagara) constituency, by Executive Magistrate Mong Achen, who is assigned to ensure compliance with election rules in Lohagara upazila.
BNP announced Nazmul Mostafa Amin as its candidate for the seat on 4 December. A first-time contestant, he entered the campaign trail following the announcement.
Explaining the action, Lohagara Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Mong Achen said the candidate was stopped at the Bot Tali Station area on the upazila border after entering Lohagara via Satkania from Chattogram.
"He was standing inside a jeep, with dozens of motorcycles, jeeps and private cars positioned in front of and behind him," the magistrate said. "Such motor processions after the announcement of the election schedule are a clear violation of the code of conduct."
He added that Nazmul Mostafa Amin was fined under Section 27 of the Election Code of Conduct 2025 and warned to strictly follow the rules.
"After the intervention, he did not proceed further with the convoy and later went to attend a religious gathering," the official said.
Nazmul Mostafa Amin later admitted the violation in a speech circulated in social media, apologising for failing to comply with the election code of conduct and for the public inconvenience caused by the motorcade.
He claimed that the convoy was not pre-planned. "I was coming from the city to visit my constituency. Despite my requests, party leaders, activists and local residents came out to welcome me, which led to some public suffering. I sincerely apologise to the people of my area," he said.
He also said he respects the law of the country and would pay the fine imposed by the magistrate promptly.
The Election Commission announced the schedule for the 13th parliamentary election on 11 December. According to the schedule, voting will be held on 12 February.
