Let debate be the vessel through which we confront injustice

Debate should be viewed not merely as a competition of winning and losing, but as a form of practical education and a means of standing against injustice and social contradictions, speakers said at the grand finale and prize-giving ceremony of the GMHSDS National Debate Festival 2026, held at Government Muslim High School in Chattogram.

Bakalia Government College won the college category, while Government Muslim High School became champion in the school category. The winners were later presented with trophies and prizes.

The final round saw school and college debaters deliver arguments before an attentive audience at the GMHS auditorium. The venue fell silent during the final argument by Aslam Sadaf of the Government Muslim High School Debating Society, before the results sparked applause and celebration.
Chief guest Md Nur Nabi said, "Debate is not simply a competition to win; it is a form of practical education."
He said debating helps students develop reasoning and analytical skills, while giving them the courage to speak out against injustice. It also broadens their thinking and teaches them to respect differing views.
In his welcome speech, Jalal Uddin said debating skills would help students develop leadership abilities. He said learning to present views through reasoning, respect opposing opinions and analyse issues deeply broadens students' perspectives.
According to the organisers, debate can promote reasoning, analytical thinking and freedom of expression among young people while raising awareness of social inequalities and other issues.
