Six people suffered burns in an explosion and subsequent fire at the Shinepukur Ceramic Factory, owned by Beximco Group, in the Kashimpur area of Gazipur, while carrying out LPG cylinder repair works on Friday night.

The injured were admitted to the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka later that night, confirmed Abdullah Al Arefin, deputy assistant director of Gazipur Fire Service and Civil Defence.

He said the explosion happened at around 9pm Friday.

The injured were identified as Md Rahat, 32, Abu Raihan, 32, Rezaul, 55, Rupom, 25, Tanvir, 37, and Md Faruk, 55. None of them are employees of Shinepukur Ceramic. They went to the factory to repair gas cylinders on a contractual basis, said Abdullah.

Citing the emergency department doctors at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost in-charge Md Faruk said Rupom sustained 6% flame burns, Rezaul 2%, Tanvir 16%, Faruk 21%, Abu Raihan 44%, and Rahat 15%.

All six are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital's emergency department, he added.
