Tax intelligence probes assets of Biman CEO arrested in child domestic worker abuse case
The Tax Intelligence and Investigation Unit have launched a probe into the assets of Biman Bangladesh Airlines Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Md Shafiqur Rahman and his wife, Bithi Akter, who have been arrested and sent to jail in a case filed over torturing an 11-year-old domestic worker.
Investigators have also begun searching for assets held in the name of other members of the couple's family, said Md Abdur Rakib, commissioner of the Income Tax Intelligence and Investigation Unit of the National Board of Revenue (NBR).
He added that as part of the probe, letters were sent to banks today (3 February) seeking details of their bank transactions.
"We have initially traced some of his assets, where indications of information concealment have been found," he said.
Another official from the investigation unit said an apartment belonging to Shafiqur has been traced in Uttara, Dhaka, with its value declared at only Tk10 lakh. Information has also been found about a plot of land in Aftabnagar, the official added.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism has terminated the contract-based appointment of Shafiqur as Biman MD and CEO following his arrest and incarceration.
The injured child domestic worker, who was allegedly tortured at Shafiqur's residence, has been admitted to a hospital. Images showing injury marks on the child's body went viral on social media, sparking widespread outrage and criticism.
