Launch services on the internal river routes in Barishal have been suspended due to rough weather caused by a low-pressure formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas.

The suspension was enforced early today (29 May), confirmed Selim Reza, an official at the Barishal River Port Authority.

No decision has been made yet about launch services on the Dhaka-Barishal route, but smaller launches operating on internal routes have been halted as a safety precaution, Selim said.

Services will resume once weather conditions improve, Serim added.

Tajul Islam, a sub-assistant engineer of the Hydrology department under the Barishal Water Development Board, said water levels at six of 12 key river points in the region have crossed the danger mark since yesterday morning (28 May), raising concerns about possible flooding in low-lying areas.

Bashir Ahmed, in-charge of the Barishal Meteorological Office, said the low-pressure system in the Bay has caused turbulent conditions at sea and on the rivers.

All fishing boats have been advised to return to shore for safety, Bashir said.

As of the latest update at 9am today, Payra Sea Port has been advised to hoist cautionary signal no-3, while Barishal River Port has been placed under signal no-2.
