Ctg port authority conducts leaflet distribution programme to reduce waterlogging, prevent plastic pollution

The Chittagong Port Authority today (11 March) conducted a leaflet distribution programme to raise public awareness about reducing waterlogging and preventing plastic pollution in Chattogram city.

Scout members of educational institutions run by the Chittagong Port Authority distributed leaflets on the negative effects of waterlogging and plastic pollution in Chattogram city, reads a press release.

CPA Member (Harbor and Marine) Captain Ahmed Amin Abdullah, chief hydrographer, secretary of the Chittagong Port Authority and senior officials were present at the distribution programme.

In the press release, the Chittagong Port Authority said a huge amount of polythene, plastic bottles, clothes and various wastes fall into the Karnaphuli River every day through 36 canals and drains of Chattogram city, which is posing a serious threat to the river's environment.

Due to waste, the city is becoming increasingly waterlogged and the navigability of the Karnaphuli River navigation channel is decreasing, resulting in the government having to spend extra time and money on dredging.

Plastic waste is accumulating at the mouth of the canal and obstructing the flow of water, resulting in the problem of waterlogging becoming more and more apparent day by day. Water pollution is increasing due to dumping of household waste into the drains and spreading of diseases.

Due to pollution, the biodiversity of the Karnaphuli River is under threat and there is a negative impact on the river-based economy and livelihoods.
