Gohira’s dominance: Three BNP MPs emerge from one Ctg union
In the 12th national election, the same union produced three MPs, all nominated by the Awami League.
Raozan's Gohira union has emerged as a political stronghold, with three members of parliament elected from this single union in the 13th general election, all from the BNP.
The three victorious candidates are Giasuddin Quader Chowdhury from Chattogram-6 (Raozan), Humam Quader Chowdhury from Chattogram-7 (Rangunia), and Sayeed Al Noman from Chattogram-10 (Double Mooring-Halishahar).
In Raozan, Giasuddin won in a landslide with 1,12,237 votes. His closest rivals Elias Noori of the Bangladesh Islami Front and Jamaat-e-Islami's Md Shahjahan Manju secured 27,146 and 22,118 votes, respectively.
Humam, nephew of Giasuddin, won the Rangunia seat with 1,01,445 votes. The son of late Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury defeated the Jamaat-e-Islami's ATM Rezaul Karim, who polled 41,719 votes.
Meanwhile, Sayeed claimed victory in Chattogram-10 with 1,22,978 votes, defeating Jamaat candidate Shamsuzzaman Helali, who received 76,919 votes.
Sayeed is the son of former BNP vice chairman and minister Abdullah Al Noman. The East Delta University founder currently serves as president of the Jatioatabadi Pat Sramik Dal. His father represented the constituency multiple times and held key ministerial posts.
Shamim Uddin, a Chittagong University student from Gohira, told The Business Standard, "With three members of parliament elected from Gohira union this time, there is a festive atmosphere among local residents. In the past, the same number of representatives have also been elected from this politically prominent area. Currently, significant development can be seen in double-lane roads, schools, madrasahs, and mosques."
He added, "In the field of education, the village is doing well, with more than 20 students each year gaining admission to top institutions including Chittagong University. The main expectation of the local people now is that the newly elected MPs will not only fulfil their respective responsibilities but also play a special role in the overall development of the area."
The home of late Chattogram politician and former Chittagong City Corporation mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury is also located in this union.
Gohira union's parliamentary dominance is not new. In the 12th national election, the same union produced three MPs, all nominated by the Awami League.
In that election, ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury secured a fifth consecutive term from Chattogram-6.
From the same union, Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel won Chattogram-9, while Md Mohiuddin Bachchu was elected from Chattogram-10.
