A fi e that raged through Shewrapara kitchen market in Dhaka early today (28 February) gutted 61 shops, including a shoe showroom, according to Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD).

Lima Khanam, duty officer at the FSCD headquarters, told UNB that the fire erupted from an electric short-circuit at a shop of kitchen market near Shewrapara Metro Station on Begum Rokeya Sarani.

Upon receiving information at around 2:42am, three firefighting units rushed to the scene. Later, five more units joined the operation, she said.

Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control after 45 minutes of efforts, and it was completely doused at 5:50am, the Fire Service official said.

The fire caused damages to 51 kitchen shops (vegetable, fish, and meat), eight grocery stores, a Bata showroom and an electric shop, she said.

They primarily estimated losses of Tk50 lakh caused by the fire, Lima added.
