Youths embrace plastic pollution awareness in environment day art event

On Saturday, 17 May 2025, the Department of Environment organised an art competition for children and adolescents under the theme "Say No to Plastic Pollution" in celebration of World Environment Day.
The event occurred at 3:00 PM in the National Art Gallery Plaza of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
Dr Md Kamruzamman, NDC, Director General of the Department of Environment, and Dr Mu Sohrab Ali, Additional Director General, were present to oversee the proceedings. The competition was coordinated by Ms Rajeenara Begum, Director of Waste and Chemical Management, with the assistance of other senior officials, including Mr Md Khaled Hasan, Director (IT), and Dr Abdullah Al Mamun, Deputy Director (Waste and Chemical Management), who also attended.
A total of 354 participants competed across four categories: Group A (under 8 years), Group B (8 to 12 years), Group C (12 to 16 years), and a Special Needs Group.
The judging panel featured distinguished experts, including Professor Syed Abul Barq Alvi, renowned artist and former Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Dhaka; Mr Mostafa Zaman, Director (Fine Arts) of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy; and Director Khandakar Rezaul Hashem.
The competition highlighted young participants' creativity and environmental awareness, reinforcing the urgent call to reduce plastic pollution.
