CU seminar inspires youth to lead social change

A seminar titled "Enrich Your Civic Knowledge" was held at the University of Chattogram (CU) on Tuesday (1 July), aiming to deepen students' understanding of citizenship, leadership, and their potential role in building an inclusive society.
Organised by youth platform Nabojagoron with support from the Bangladesh Youth Leadership Centre (BYLC), the event brought together around 60 students from various academic departments. Hosted in the university's IT building virtual classroom, the session blended keynote speeches, interactive discussions, and participant reflections to encourage active citizenship among young people.
Rather than focusing on formal leadership titles, the seminar emphasised the power of purpose-driven action in everyday life. "Leadership is not about position, it's about purpose," said Akhlas Uddin, Executive at BYLC's Leadership Development and Teaching Department. "Young people can lead simply by stepping up in their communities and creating small, meaningful shifts."
Kh. Ali Ar Raji, Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication and Journalism at CU, challenged students to examine the barriers they face in expressing their views. "Democratic practice is weak in many of our campuses. When students speak up for their rights, their activism is often politicised," he said. "But a university should be a space where civic values, critical thinking, and responsibility are nurtured."
Part of a broader initiative titled "Enrich Your Civic Knowledge: Who Am I", the seminar seeks to promote a culture of reflective and engaged citizenship among students.
"We want to help create a generation that doesn't just inherit society but reshapes it with responsibility and vision," said Nabojagoron President Rakibul Hasan Rakib.
Nabojagoron is a youth-led platform focused on raising awareness of civic rights and responsibilities. Through events like this, it aims to build spaces for dialogue and foster leadership rooted in empathy and accountability.
The Business Standard served as the media partner for the seminar.
