Bangladesh Embassy in Riyadh observes 21 february with due solemnity
The Bangladesh Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, observed Language Martyrs' Day and International Mother Language Day 2026 with due solemnity.
Marking the day, Bangladesh Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Md Delwar Hossain hoisted the national flag at half-mast at the embassy premises in the morning. He later paid tribute to the language martyrs by placing a floral wreath at the Shaheed Minar, accompanied by embassy officials. Expatriate Bangladeshis in Riyadh also placed flowers at the Shaheed Minar in remembrance of the martyrs.
As part of the observance, the embassy organised a discussion meeting at its auditorium. At the beginning of the programme, messages issued on the occasion by the President, Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, and State Minister for Foreign Affairs were read out.
Speakers at the discussion included members of the Bangladeshi expatriate community in Riyadh—Hamidul Haque Shamim, Md Tajul Islam Gazi, and Dr A K M Golam Hasnain Sohan. The Ambassador delivered the concluding speech, highlighting the significance of the day.
Remembering the language martyrs with deep respect, the Ambassador stated that the Language Movement sparked the country's sense of identity and nationalism, making people more aware of their rights. He added that Bangladesh later emerged on the world map as an independent state through a series of movements and struggles, and noted that history shows Bangladeshis achieve success when they remain united on a just cause.
Referring to the context of Saudi Arabia, he noted that Bangladeshis have become closely connected with Saudi society through their work. He stressed the importance of expatriate workers performing their duties with skill, honesty, and professionalism to present Bangladesh positively abroad.
He expressed hope that if Bangladesh is established as a country of skilled and reliable people, the nation will advance further—leading to greater expansion and enrichment of the country's language and culture.
In closing, he urged expatriates to uphold the indomitable spirit of the 1952 Language Movement by playing a responsible role from their respective positions, strengthening Bangladesh's image abroad, and contributing constructively to the country's overall development.
The programme concluded with a special prayer seeking the wellbeing of the country and the nation.
