Bangladesh Embassy in Rome observes language martyrs’ day
The Bangladesh Embassy in Rome, Italy, observed Language Martyrs' Day and International Mother Language Day 2026 with due solemnity.
The observance formally began in the early hours with the embassy placing floral tributes at the permanent Shaheed Minar at Isaac Rabin Park in Rome. Later, at the embassy premises, the national anthem was played, the national flag was kept at half-mast, and a wreath was placed at the temporary Shaheed Minar set up on the mission compound.
In the next phase, the embassy organised a discussion programme at its conference room with the participation of embassy officials and employees, expatriate community leaders, Bangladeshi students, representatives of social and business organisations, eminent members of the diaspora, and Italian friends of Bangladesh.
Messages issued on the occasion by the President, Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, and State Minister for Foreign Affairs were read out. In addition, a video message from the President of the UNESCO General Conference was screened and a message from the UNESCO Director-General was read.
Speakers recalled the spirit and significance of Amar Ekushey with deep respect, and described the sacrifices of the Language Movement as a source of inspiration for democracy, justice, and human rights.
In his speech, Ambassador Rakibul Haque highlighted the historic role of Amar Ekushey in Bangladesh's struggle for independence. Referring to the theme of International Mother Language Day 2026—'Youth voice on multilingual education'—he underscored the importance of the young generation learning other languages alongside their mother tongue to become constructive partners in inclusive societies abroad.
He urged all present to uphold the spirit of Amar Ekushey by strengthening national unity and playing an active role, from their respective positions, in building a developed and self-respecting Bangladesh.
