Bangladesh mission in South Africa holds wreath-laying, children’s art contest
The Bangladesh High Commission in Pretoria, South Africa, observed Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day 2026 with wreath-laying ceremonies and other programmes on its premises.
The programme began at 9:00am with the placing of wreaths at the Shaheed Minar at the high commission. Diplomats from various countries based in Pretoria, members of the Bangladeshi community, high commission officials, and their family members attended.
After the tribute, a one-minute silence was observed, and special prayers were offered for the language martyrs.
In the second phase, recitation from the Holy Qur'an was held, followed by the reading of messages from the President, the Prime Minister, and the Foreign Affairs Minister and State Minister.
Members of the Bangladeshi community also spoke on the significance of Amar Ekushey February and the importance of preserving and promoting the mother tongue.
In his concluding remarks, High Commissioner Shah Ahmed Shafi highlighted the spirit of the Language Movement and emphasised the importance of nurturing Bangla language and culture among the Bangladeshi diaspora. He also conveyed his best wishes for the success of Bangladesh's newly formed government.
The programme concluded with a children's art competition and prize distribution.
