Women leaders urge EC to cancel Jamaat ameer’s candidacy
The demand was raised during a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin at Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital
A group of women leaders today (February 8) urged the Election Commission to revoke the candidacy of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman over his alleged "defamatory, hateful and misogynistic" remarks against working women from his verified X account.
Speaking to reporters, Ganatantrik Biplabi Party President Moshrefa Mishu said the remarks were a gross insult to women and undermined their dignity, labour and contribution to society.
She rejected the party's claim that the post was the result of hacking, saying no official statement or transparent investigation had been made public.
The demand was raised during a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin at Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital, where a delegation from 11 women's organisations submitted a memorandum outlining four demands, including cancellation of his candidacy.
The memorandum also called for immediate withdrawal of the remarks, an unconditional apology to working women, and a commitment to refrain from such statements in the future, along with appropriate action by the Election Commission under its code of conduct.
