Save the Children demands justice for Magura child rape victim
This year’s data shows that 2,362 women and girls have been victims of violence in 2024, with 1,036 of them being children

Save the Children has called for swift justice for the eight-year-old child who was reportedly raped while visiting her sister's house in Magura on 5 March.
In a press release, the organisation expressed deep concern over the rising incidents of violence against women and children in Bangladesh.
This year's data shows that 2,362 women and girls have been victims of violence in 2024, with 1,036 of them being children.
"We want systemic justice for the victim of this heinous crime. We strongly believe that authorities must take immediate measures to ensure perpetrators are brought to justice through fair trials," said Shumon Sengupta, country director of Save the Children, in the press release.
"These cases are on the rise, with almost 40% of victims of violence being children. The data shows that there needs to be a change to ensure that children, especially girls, are safe from any abuse and violence. This starts with changing mindsets to put their protection first as a proactive means of prevention," he added.
"Uplifting children's rights and quality of life requires them to be protected. At Save the Children, we strive to ensure that the right measures are taken, and appropriate structures are in place to prevent and respond to abuse, neglect, exploitation, and violence," Sengupta added.
Save the Children also urged the government to implement an integrated child protection mechanism starting from families and communities to prevent such crimes.
