A man was beaten to death over a loan took from a local moneylender in Hatkhola area of Kutubdia Upazila in Cox's Bazar on Monday.

The deceased was identified as Bazal Karim, 45, son of late Chaber Ahmed of Hatkhola area of Ali Akbar Dale Union.

Didarul Ferdaus, officer-in-charge of Kutubdia Police Station, said in February, Bazal Karim took a loan of Tk 5,000 from his neighbour Shahab Uddin on Tk 500 monthly interest.

But he failed to pay Tk500, the interest of April, due to the Covid-19.

On Monday, there was an altercation between them over the issue. At one stage, Shahab Uddin, his father Motaleb and others beat Bazal with sticks, leaving him and his wife injured.

The injured were taken to the Upazila Health Complex where the duty doctor declared Bazal dead, he added.

The body was sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

On information, police rushed to the spot and arrested key suspect Shahab Uddin, his parents Motaleb and Putina Begum, his brother Alauddin and brother-in-law Fayez.

A case will be filed once the wife of Bazal is released from the hospital, the OC added.
