Man 'beaten to death on suspicion of theft' at Jaflong tea estate; 3 detained

Police recovered the body of a 38-year-old man from a tea estate at Jaflong in Sylhet's Goainghat upazila today (5 August).
The victim, identified as Imam Uddin, son of Hormuz Ali of Medi village, was allegedly beaten to death after being detained on suspicion of theft around 3am.
Locals reported that several individuals subjected him to a violent assault inside an office room adjacent to a bungalow within the estate. He later died from his injuries.
Goainghat Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sarker Mohammad Tofayel said the killing likely occurred during the night. Acting on a tip-off, police recovered the body and sent it to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination, he added.
Following the incident, local residents staged a protest at the estate gate, demanding the arrest of those involved. In response, police detained three suspects — Akkel Pradhan, Niranjan Goala, and Liton — after which the demonstrators dispersed.
An investigation is currently underway, police said.
