Mahfuz Anam among 12 appointed as members of Press Council

Mahfuz Anam, editor of The Daily Star, has been appointed as one of the 12 new members of the Bangladesh Press Council.
The appointments were announced through an official notification issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Monday (28 July).
The newly appointed members will serve a two-year term from the date of the notification, the notice stated.
The other members include Obaidur Rahman Shahin, acting president of the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ); Daulat Akhtar Mala, president of the Economic Reporters' Forum; Md Shahidul Islam, president of the Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ); Nurul Kabir, editor of New Age; Dewan Hanif Mahmud, editor of Bonik Barta; Shamsul Huq Zahid, editor of The Financial Express; Ramiz Uddin Chowdhury, editor of Dainik Purbokone; Akhtar Hossain Khan, adviser to the Newspaper Owners' Association of Bangladesh (NOAB); Prof Mohammad Azam, director general of the Bangla Academy; Md Fakhrul Islam, secretary of the UGC; and Zainul Abedin, vice-chairman of the Bangladesh Bar Council.
Previously, the interim government appointed retired High Court Justice Md AKM Abdul Hakim as the new chairman of the Press Council on a three-year contractual basis.
His predecessor, retired Justice Md Nizamul Huq — who was appointed during the Awami League government's tenure — had his appointment revoked on 9 September 2024.
