BNP expels Rumeen Farhana, several other leaders for breaching party discipline
The party said all of them have been expelled from primary membership as well as from all posts at every level of the party.
The BNP has expelled Rumeen Farhana and several other leaders for "violating party discipline and carrying out organisational activities in defiance of party decisions".
In a statement issued today (30 December), the party said Rumeen Farhana, joint international affairs secretary of the BNP National Executive Committee, along with executive committee members Muhammad Gias Uddin, Mohammad Shah Alam, Hasan Mamun and Abdul Khaleq, have been expelled from the party.
Those expelled also include former assistant vice-president of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Secretary General of the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Welfare Front, Tarun Dey; former convener of BNP Dhaka North city unit, Saiful Alam Nirab; Sylhet district BNP Assistant Vice-President Mamunur Rashid; and Brahmanbaria's Bancharampur upazila BNP President Mehdi Hasan Polash.
The party said all of them have been expelled from primary membership as well as from all posts at every level of the party.
Earlier on 24 December, Rumeen collected the nomination form to contest as an independent candidate from the Brahmanbaria‑2 constituency in the upcoming 13th national election.
Speaking to journalists, Rumeen said she had already informed the BNP high command that she would run independently if she did not receive the party's nomination.
"I had informed the party long ago that if I did not receive the nomination, I would contest the election independently. This is neither a secret nor a sudden decision. I discussed it with my leaders and activists, and after finalizing my choice, I also informed the party," she said.
"The party will decide in its own way, and I will follow my own," she added.
The Brahmanbaria‑2 constituency comprises Sarail and Ashuganj upazilas, as well as the Budhanti and Chandura unions of Bijoynagar upazila. BNP did not nominate a candidate for the seat, leaving it for its alliance partner, Jamiat Ulema‑e‑Islam Bangladesh.
Maulana Junayed Al Habib, vice president of Jamiat Ulema‑e‑Islam Bangladesh, is set to contest the seat.
