Rumeen Farhana collects nomination form as independent candidate for Brahmanbaria‑2
"The party will decide in its own way, and I will follow my own," she said
Barrister Rumeen Farhana, BNP's international affairs assistant secretary, has collected the nomination form to contest as an independent candidate from the Brahmanbaria‑2 constituency in the upcoming 13th national election.
Ali Hossain, former organising secretary of Sarail Upazila Jubo Dal, collected the nomination paper on Rumeen's behalf from the Sarail Upazila Nirbahi Office this afternoon (24 December).
Speaking to journalists at a restaurant in Ashuganj upazila, Rumeen said she had already informed the BNP high command that she would run independently if she did not receive the party's nomination.
"I had informed the party long ago that if I did not receive the nomination, I would contest the election independently. This is neither a secret nor a sudden decision. I discussed it with my leaders and activists, and after finalizing my choice, I also informed the party," she said.
"The party will decide in its own way, and I will follow my own," she added.
Rumeen explained that she reached her decision after consulting with supporters. "Before deciding to run as an independent candidate, I met with everyone and told them I would follow their guidance. They said if I did not contest the election, they would be left without a guardian. That's when I decided to run. This decision belongs to my leaders and activists, it is not mine alone," she said.
She described the people of her area as her source of strength and courage, her voters, workers, and supporters. "Their hard work and sacrifices have brought me this far. So, whatever they want becomes my decision," she said.
On the question of resigning from BNP, Rumeen told journalists that she has not yet made a decision. "I have not made any decision on this yet. I will consult my leaders and activists, and if they advise me, I will take that path," she said.
Several former BNP leaders and activists, along with members of Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal from Sarail and Ashuganj upazilas, attended the event as Rumeen collected her nomination form.
The Brahmanbaria‑2 constituency comprises Sarail and Ashuganj upazilas, as well as the Budhanti and Chandura unions of Bijoynagar upazila. BNP did not nominate a candidate for the seat, leaving it for its alliance partner, Jamiat Ulema‑e‑Islam Bangladesh.
Maulana Junayed Al Habib, vice president of Jamiat Ulema‑e‑Islam Bangladesh, is set to contest the seat.
