Khaleda Zia's janaza tomorrow, to be laid to rest beside Ziaur Rahman
According to Chief Adviser’s Press Wing, the burial will be conducted with full state honours at the mazar of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman at around 3:30pm.
A funeral prayer (namaz-e-janaza) for BNP Chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia will be held at 2pm tomorrow (31 December) at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
She will be laid to rest beside her husband, late president and freedom fighter Ziaur Rahman, at Zia Uddyan, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said at a special meeting of the Advisory Council held today (30 December).
According to a press statement from the Chief Adviser's Press Wing, the burial will be conducted with full state honours at the mazar of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman at around 3:30pm. The statement said the official burial will be completed with state formalities and that entry for the general public will be prohibited. It also advised that no bags or heavy items will be allowed at the venue.
The Advisory Council meeting was held at the state guest house Jamuna and chaired by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, hours after Khaleda Zia's death.
At the start of the meeting, members observed a one-minute silence and offered prayers seeking forgiveness for the departed soul of the three-time prime minister. Religious Affairs Adviser AFM Khalid Hossain led the prayers.
The meeting also decided to observe three days of state mourning starting tomorrow and declared a one-day general holiday tomorrow in observance of Khaleda Zia's death.
Fakhrul attended the meeting as a special invitee. On behalf of Khaleda Zia's family and the BNP, he expressed gratitude to the interim government and thanked the chief adviser for ensuring security and providing necessary assistance during Khaleda Zia's treatment.
As Fakhrul informed the council about the funeral and burial arrangements, Yunus assured him that the government will provide all necessary cooperation.
Khaleda Zia passed away at around 6am today while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka at the age of 79.
Born on 15 August 1946, Khaleda Zia led the BNP for decades, navigating periods of political upheaval, imprisonment and political comeback.
She served as prime minister for three terms, from 1991 to 1996, a few weeks after February 1996 and again from 2001 to 2006.
The late BNP chairperson is recognised as the first female prime minister of Bangladesh and the second elected woman prime minister in the Muslim world.
