Fresh clash erupts between students from Dhaka, Ideal colleges despite ‘peace deal’
This is not the first time students of the two colleges have broken their peace agreement.
Students of Dhaka College and Ideal College have once again become embroiled in a clash, breaking a "peace agreement" they had previously reached.
The skirmish took place at around 11:30am today (9 December) in the capital's Science Lab area, with law enforcement working to bring the situation under control.
Jishanul Haque, additional deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Dhanmondi zone, said police are trying to "de-escalate the situation."
This is not the first time students of the two colleges have broken their peace agreement.
Earlier, on 2 December, several students from both colleges were travelling on the same bus when an argument ensued. The quarrel soon turned physical.
Later, when students of Ideal College came to chase Dhaka College students, a clash broke out in front of Uttara Bank near Dhaka College.
Police quickly intervened, brought the situation under control and sent the students back to their respective institutions.
Students from the two colleges, who frequently face off, signed the peace agreement at a ceremony on 9 November.
The agreement was facilitated by New Market Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) AKM Mahfuzul Haque, with the organisation of a mediation session at the Dhaka College auditorium in order to ease tensions between the institutions that have long disrupted academic activities and caused public inconvenience in the area.
