A nine-member committee has been formed to prevent conflict among students of Dhaka City College, Dhaka College, and Ideal College, who frequently face off in clashes in the Science Lab and New Market areas of the capital.
The decision was announced at a gathering of students from the three colleges at the ANM Najib Uddin Khan Khurram Auditorium of Dhaka College today (16 November) at 11am.
The event was organised by New Market Police Station under Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP) Ramna Division.
According to the announcement, the committee will consist of three teacher representatives — one from each college — along with three student representatives and three representatives from the Dhanmondi, Kalabagan, and New Market Police Stations.
AKM Elius, Principal of Dhaka College, told The Business Standard that the initiative aims to prevent further clashes and ensure swift action if any incident occurs.
"We have also kept students on the committee. The students are also happy with this initiative; they too want to maintain a peaceful situation," he added.
Earlier in the programme, higher secondary students of Dhaka College welcomed students of Ideal College and City College with flowers.
Md Masud Alam, deputy police commissioner of the Ramna Division of the DMP, attended the event as chief guest.
Special guests included Professor Kazi Niamul Haque, acting principal of City College, and Mohammad Rezwanul Haque, acting principal of Ideal College.
The programme was presided over by Dhaka College Principal AKM Elius.
In his remarks, Deputy Commissioner Masud Alam said the three institutions are prominent colleges located in the heart of Dhaka, but incidents of unprovoked assaults among students have persisted.
He urged students to move past previous hostilities and work towards a better future.
On 9 November, students of Dhaka College and Ideal College signed a peace agreement facilitated by AKM Mahfuzul Haque, officer-in-charge of New Market Police Station. City College students did not participate at that time.
Long-standing tensions among the three institutions have repeatedly disrupted academic activities and caused inconvenience in the surrounding area.
