Dhaka College, Ideal College students clash again, police fire tear gas
The unrest has completely halted traffic on both sides of the Mirpur Road in the New Market area.
Students from Dhaka College and Dhanmondi Ideal College once again clashed in the Science Laboratory area of the capital today (22 January), prompting police to fire tear gas to bring the situation under control.
The cause of the renewed clash between the students from the two institutions could not be immediately determined.
During the clashes, students were seen hurling bricks and stones at police.
As tensions escalated, police fired two rounds of tear gas shells inside the Dhaka College campus to disperse the students. Soon after, Dhaka College students scattered from the area.
A student of Dhaka College alleged that Ideal College students attacked at least seven students of their institution over the past two days. He claimed that Ideal College students were wielding cleavers during the attacks on Dhaka College students.
In light of the attacks, Dhaka College students started advancing towards Ideal College around 11:30am today, but were stopped by police in the Science Lab area.
The unrest has completely halted traffic on both sides of the Mirpur Road in the New Market area, said Shah Mostafa Tarikuzzaman, assistant commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Dhanmondi Zone).
Police remain deployed in the area to prevent further escalation and restore normalcy.
