Naimur Rahman Durjoy, former Awami League MP from Manikganj-1 and former captain of the Bangladesh national cricket team, has officially been shown arrested in connection with a case involving the accumulation of illegal assets worth Tk11.21 crore.
The assets were allegedly acquired during his tenure as a lawmaker through a series of irregularities and corrupt practices.
The order was issued today (29 July) by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib, following a petition submitted by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Aminul Islam, assistant director of the ACC's Prosecution Division, confirmed the development. The case was initially filed on 18 December last year by ACC Director Abul Hasnat, after preliminary findings substantiated the allegations.
According to case documents, Durjoy is accused of misusing his position to unlawfully obtain Tk4.22 crore from Manikganj Power Generation Limited. He is also alleged to have carried out suspicious transactions amounting to Tk47.19 crore through 13 personal bank accounts across various financial institutions, as well as 9 business-related accounts.
Sources confirmed that Durjoy was arrested by members of the Manikganj District Detective Branch on the night of 3 July from the Lalmatia area of Dhaka. He has remained in custody since his arrest.
Earlier, on 24 October last year, a Dhaka court imposed a travel ban on both Durjoy and his wife in relation to the ongoing investigation.
Durjoy was elected to Parliament from the Manikganj-1 constituency in the 2014 and 2018 general elections as a candidate of the ruling Awami League.
