Plans for the country’s development were also discussed during the meetings
The ambassadors of Pakistan, Germany and Australia today (9 January) paid separate courtesy calls on BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman at the BNP chairperson's Gulshan office in Dhaka.
Speaking to reporters after the meetings, BNP Joint Secretary General Humayun Kabir said the envoys expressed condolences over the death of Khaleda Zia at the outset of the discussions.
He said the meetings focused on strengthening bilateral relations, investment opportunities, the BNP's future plans and its foreign policy outlook. The diplomats also sought to know what steps the BNP would take to revive the economy if it comes to power in the future, he added.
Plans for the country's development were also discussed during the meetings, he said.
According to BNP Media Cell member Shayrul Kabir Khan, German Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr Rüdiger Lotz met Tarique Rahman at around 6pm, followed by Australian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Susan Ryle at around 7pm.
Earlier in the day, Pakistan's High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Imran Haider, also met with the BNP Acting Chairman.
Humayun Kabir said Tarique Rahman is being regarded as an important political leader of Bangladesh, noting that international interest in him has increased following his return to the country.
Responding to a question, he said the envoys did not make any observations regarding the election, but showed interest in the polls.
In reply to another question, Humayun Kabir said Tarique Rahman would become the party's chairman through its organisational process, adding that the matter would be resolved soon.
