Earlier, on 25 December, Md Yashir Arafat, the investigation officer of the case, submitted an application to show him arrested.
Awami League Presidium Member and former lawmaker Kazi Zafar Ullah has been shown arrested in a murder case filed over the killing of a man during the July Uprising in the capital's Banani area. The court has ordered that he be sent to jail in connection with the case.
The order was issued today (5 January) by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana. Following the order, he was sent to prison.
Earlier, on 25 December, Md Yashir Arafat, the investigation officer of the case, submitted an application to show him arrested. The court then fixed 5 January for a hearing on the matter.
During the hearing, state prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruqi placed arguments in favour of the arrest. After hearing both sides, the court allowed the application and ordered that Kazi Zafar Ullah be sent to jail in this case.
According to the case statement, on 19 July 2024, during the anti-discrimination student-public movement, Md Shahjahan, a factory worker, took part in a peaceful procession under the Mohakhali flyover in Dhaka. At that time, leaders and activists of the now-banned Awami League and its associate organisations opened fire on the procession.
Shahjahan sustained two bullet wounds, one in the chest and another in the abdomen. He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment, where he died after four days.
Following the incident, Shahjahan's mother Sajeda filed a murder case with Banani Police Station on 18 December.
It is worth noting that police arrested Kazi Zafar Ullah from his Gulshan residence on 18 September last year. He reportedly fell ill while being taken to the Detective Branch (DB) office and was first admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, before being transferred the same night to the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases.
After recovering, he was brought to the court on 22 September, when the court ordered him to be sent to jail in a case filed with Paltan Police Station. He has remained in custody since then.
