Jamaat activist among 5 given jail terms for polls code breach

Five people, including an activist of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, have been detained and sentenced to different terms by a summary court for violating the election code of conduct, according to a press release issued by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
A worker of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami was caught red-handed in Sutrapur today (11 February) while preparing to distribute cash.
He was immediately tried on the spot through summary proceedings and sentenced to two days' imprisonment by Special Metropolitan Magistrate of Lalbagh Division Arifur Rahman, the press release added.
The convicted individual has been identified as Habibur Rahman, 63. At the time, 12 envelopes containing cash were seized from his possession.
Each envelope contained Tk500, amounting to a total of Tk6,000. The seized money has been confiscated in favour of the state, as per the press release.
In a separate incident, the special metropolitan magistrate of Wari Division sentenced one individual to one month's imprisonment and another to seven days' simple imprisonment under summary trial procedures for loitering without satisfactory cause.
Additionally, Special Metropolitan Magistrate of Motijheel Division Mohidur Rahman, sentenced two individuals to 10 days' imprisonment each in a case filed with Mugda Police Station.
The punishment was awarded under Section 75 of the DMP Ordinance for making negative remarks about the police after being detained by members of the public, the press release mentioned.
