11-party alliance claims several injured after BNP men attacked Jamaat, NCP supporters in Kurigram
In a press statement issued by Tanzim Hasan of the alliance’s Kurigram-2 media cell, the coalition claimed the attack was planned and aimed at creating fear in the area.
The 11-party alliance today (15 February) alleged that several of its activists were injured after BNP men attacked supporters of Jamaat and the National Citizen Party (NCP) in Rajarhat upazila of Kurigram.
In a press statement issued by Tanzim Hasan of the alliance's Kurigram-2 media cell, the coalition claimed the attack was planned and aimed at creating fear in the area.
According to the statement, the first incident occurred on Friday night (13 February), when BNP activists allegedly played loud music in different parts of the area, causing distress to residents.
It said that when locals protested and posted about the matter on social media, BNP activists became angered.
"The following night at around 8pm, Nasir Limon, a member of NCP's youth wing Jubo Shakti, was pre-plammedly confined in a house in the Sarishabari area and beaten severely," the statement reads.
It states that when Hasan Jihadi, Tanzim Hasan and Chhatra Shakti convener Hasan Mehedi went to the scene after receiving the news, they were also attacked.
The alliance alleged that more than 50 people, armed with sticks and other weapons, took part in the attack.
It named Union BNP Joint Convener Shahidul Member, Jubo Dal's Riazul, Union Jubo Dal Joint Convener Rashedul and Opu Sarkar among those who allegedly led the assault.
It claimed that the injured activists were unarmed at the time of the incident and that local women rescued them and provided shelter.
The statement further alleged that although the administration was informed, law enforcement personnel arrived nearly two hours later. The injured were later taken to the hospital.
"We want to state clearly – the ill-attempt to suppress political opponents through intimidation and terror will never succeed," the statement reads.
The 11-party alliance demanded the immediate arrest of those involved and exemplary punishment, adding, "Otherwise, this terror will be answered through a greater mass movement."
