Chattogram-15: Man posing as NSI officer arrested for attempting to extort Jamaat MP-elect
During primary interrogation, the accused confessed to the crime.
A man posing as an officer of the National Security Intelligence (NSI) has been arrested for allegedly attempting to extort money from Shahjahan Chowdhury, the newly elected member of parliament for Chattogram-15 (Satkania-Lohagara) and a leader of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.
The accused, identified as Fakhruddin, 35, a resident of Barkal union in Chandanaish upazila, was arrested yesterday (14 February) during a joint operation conducted by the army and police in the Chhamadarpara area of Satkania municipality, said Monjurul Hoq, officer-in-charge of Satkania Police Station.
He said that MP-elect Shahjahan was at his residence yesterday afternoon when Fakhruddin went there and introduced himself as an NSI officer.
At one stage, he allegedly demanded Tk20,000 in extortion from the MP's personal assistant. The matter was immediately reported to the joint forces, who conducted a drive and arrested him.
OC Monjurul further said that multiple fake photographs of the accused wearing an army uniform were recovered from his wallet.
Police Inspector (Investigation) Md Sudipta Reza of Satkania Police Station said several items were seized from the accused, including an army cap, a wallet, eight photographs of him wearing an army uniform, two cards bearing army values, one leave certificate, cash amounting to Tk3,170 in various denominations, and a motorcycle.
He added that during the primary interrogation, the accused confessed to demanding extortion.
A case has been filed against him at the police station, and the accused is set to be produced before a Chattogram court today, the inspector said.
