Modi congratulates Bangladesh's new prime minister, stresses 'inclusive' governance
Randhir Jaiswal, Official Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, said, “The letter underlined India’s commitment to supporting a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh.”
India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a congratulatory letter to Bangladesh's new Prime Minister, Tarique Rahman, following the country's recent elections, underscoring New Delhi's commitment to a "democratic, progressive and inclusive" Bangladesh.
In his letter, Modi referred to a "democratic, progressive and inclusive" Bangladesh in outlining India's approach to bilateral ties, says the Hindu.
The letter was delivered by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla during Rahman's swearing-in ceremony.
Randhir Jaiswal, Official Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, said, "The letter underlined India's commitment to supporting a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh."
"Building on the warm and historic ties between the two countries, India looks forward to further strengthening our multifaceted bilateral ties with Bangladesh," Jaiswal added.
The reference to an "inclusive" Bangladesh comes amid a political landscape in which the Awami League, led by former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, did not participate in the latest election.
Although the party did not contest the vote, reports indicate that Awami League offices at the local level have begun reopening across the country through local initiatives, rather than through a coordinated move by the central leadership.
