Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam, born on 6 October 1971, is a businessman who contested the recently held 13th general election from Dhaka-10 as a BNP candidate.
He bagged 80,436 votes, while his nearest rival, Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Md Jashim Uddin, got 77,136 votes.
While his permanent residence is in Bagerhat, he currently resides in Hatirpool, Dhaka.
Based on his official election affidavit, Rabiul, also the railways minister, has completed his master's degree.
He has a lengthy legal history, involving multiple charges listed in his election filings.
There are seven ongoing criminal cases against him. These cases are pending in various courts, including the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court in Dhaka and special tribunals.
His records also indicate involvement in 28 previous cases. However, the majority of these legal matters have been resolved, resulting in acquittals or his being exempted by the respective courts.
In October 2024, the BNP suspended its central executive committee member Rabiul's party post for his alleged involvement in the murder of Deepto TV broadcast engineer Tanjeel Jahan Tamim, reports UNB.
Earlier, on 10 October that year, Tanjeel, 32, was allegedly beaten to death by several employees of Pleasant Properties Ltd, a real estate company owned by Rabiul, in connivance with hired goons.
In his professional life, Rabiul is a businessman. He is the proprietor of M/S RB Enterprise and also serves as a company director.
For the assessment year 2025-2026, he reported a total annual income of Tk11,50,000. His business income is Tk5.5 lakh, while his director's remuneration stands at Tk6 lakh.
Rabiul's total net wealth is officially documented at Tk2,01,52,623. His financial portfolio includes both movable and immovable properties.
