Life-term convict arrested after 19 years on the run
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested a fugitive convict who was sentenced to life imprisonment in a murder case, nearly 19 years after the verdict.
The arrestee, identified as Md Morshed, 44, was detained around 8:45pm yesterday (7 February) from the Bangladesh Homeo Hall area in Jatrabari, according to RAB-3.
Confirming the matter, Staff Officer (media) of RAB-3, Senior Assistant Superintendent Sanad Barua said Morshed had been convicted in a murder case filed with Muradnagar Police Station in Cumilla on 21 October 1999.
Following the case, the Cumilla Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-1 sentenced him to life imprisonment on 6 July 2006, he said.
However, Morshed had been on the run since the filing of the case. During his years in hiding, he reportedly lived in different parts of the country under assumed identities, frequently changing his name and appearance to evade law enforcement.
RAB finally arrested him 19 years and seven months after the sentencing, the official added.
Legal proceedings have been initiated against the arrested convict, RAB said.
