Ex-AL state minister Farhad now arrested in corruption case
The Awami League leader was arrested in a July Uprising murder case in September 2024 and has been in custody at Dhaka Central Jail since then.
A Dhaka court has approved the Anti-Corruption Commission's (ACC) request to place former state minister for public administration Farhad Hossain under arrest in a corruption case.
In response to the ACC's petition, today, Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Faiz issued the order, according to the ACC's lawyer Tariqul Islam.
ACC Assistant Director and case investigation officer Khorshed Alam submitted the plea after Farhad was brought to the court from prison.
According to the petition, Farhad, who served as the state minister from 2019 to 2024, allegedly acquired assets worth more than Tk1.11 crore, which is inconsistent with his known sources of income, by abusing power.
It said he has 12 bank accounts that saw total deposits of over Tk6.54 crore and abnormal and suspicious transactions amounting to more than Tk6.35 crore.
Farhad was arrested in a July Uprising murder case in September 2024 and has been in custody at Dhaka Central Jail since then.
ACC said that, if granted bail, the Awami League leader may abscond or flee the country, and that is why it was necessary to place him under arrest in the corruption case.
According to ACC, Farhad is also facing a case filed under the Money Laundering Prevention Act, which is currently being investigated.
