Police have arrested five individuals, including two alleged professional shooters, in connection with the killing of top-listed criminal Tarik Saif Mamun, who was gunned down in broad daylight in front of the Dhaka National Medical College Hospital in Old Dhaka yesterday morning (10 November).
Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP) Deputy Commissioner (Media) Talebur Rahman confirmed the matter in a statement to the media today (11 November).
Two pistols were also recover during the arrests, he said.
The suspected shooters have been identified as Rubel and Ibrahim, both of whom are professional hitmen, according to police. The identities of the other arrestees are yet to be disclosed.
A senior official of the DMP's Detective Branch (DB) said Rubel and Ibrahim were trying to flee across the border when they were captured.
"A team of DB police arrested them this evening during separate drives in different areas of Cumilla," the official added.
Mamun, 55, a resident of Lakshmipur Sadar upazila, was shot dead in broad daylight in Old Dhaka's Sutrapur area yesterday. The killing is believed to stem from longstanding gang rivalries in the city.
Eyewitnesses mention and CCTV footage show a cinematic-style shooting: two masked men on a red motorcycle targeted Mamun as he exited the hospital at 10:51am, firing six rounds in three seconds.
To ensure his death, they fired additional shots as Mamun attempted to flee back inside the hospital gate. Both assailants, wearing caps and masks and carrying pistols, chased him before fleeing toward Kabi Nazrul College. The gunfire sent nearby residents into a panic.
