Law enforcers have arrested three more suspects for allegedly beating a garment factory mechanic to death in Gazipur's Konabari, an incident that sparked widespread criticism.

The arrests were made during drives carried out in various districts today (3 July).

The arrestees are— Md Kausar, 28, from Hariacrown village of Santhia upazila of Pabna; Shamim Ahmed, 34, from Holudia village in Madhupur upazila of Tangail; and Rashedul Hasan, 33, from Char Dugali village in Sirajganj's Shahjadpur.

With the new arrests, six individuals have been apprehended so far in connection with the incident. Meanwhile, separate applications have been filed at the court seeking remand for two other suspects – Sahfiqul Islam and Hasan Mahmud Mithun – who were arrested before, said Konabari police station OC Salahuddin.

According to police, an electric mechanic of Greenland Garments Ltd on Kashiumpur Road in Gazipur's Konabari, Hridoy, 19, was beaten to death on suspicion of theft at a time between 27 June night to 28 June morning.

As the news spread, workers of Greenland Garments and those from other nearby factories demonstrated on Greenland Garments premises, protesting Hridoy's death, leading to an indefinite closure of the factory.

Later, police collected the CCTV footage of the incident from the factory.

Hridoy, from Shuktarbaid area of Ghatail in Tangail, used to live with his family in a rented house in Harinabari-Esrar Nagar Housing Area of Konabari, Gazipur, and worked as an electrical mechanic in the dyeing section of Greenland Garments.

The deceased's brother Liton Mia, as a plaintiff, filed a murder case in connection with the incident at Konabari police station on 28 June, accusing unnamed individuals.

Drives are ongoing to arrest other suspects involved in the incident, said OC Salahuddin
