Chief Adviser directs reduction of waterlogging in Chattogram by half this monsoon
During the session, the Chief Advisor listened to updates and experiences shared by representatives of the Chattogram City Corporation, the district administration, and other service-oriented institutions, as well as civil society members
Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has instructed authorities to reduce waterlogging in Chattogram city by at least 50% during the current monsoon season and work towards eliminating it entirely in the future.
He gave the directive while speaking as the chief guest at a view-exchange meeting held today (14 May) at the Chattogram Circuit House conference room. The meeting focused on tackling waterlogging in the port city.
During the session, the Chief Advisor listened to updates and experiences shared by representatives of the Chattogram City Corporation, the district administration, and other service-oriented institutions, as well as civil society members.
"We've had enough of theoretical discussions. We want permanent solutions, not endless dialogue," he stated.
"This won't be resolved overnight, but we must start changing the situation step by step."
Acknowledging the onset of the monsoon, he noted that a complete resolution is unlikely this season.
"However, if the initiatives taken by the City Corporation and other local government bodies in recent months fail to produce tangible results this year, then it will seem as though all efforts have been in vain," he warned.
Highlighting Chattogram's historical and cultural significance, CA Yunus said the city's chronic waterlogging is not only a symbolic issue but also a deeply complex one.
"Solving this problem here will inspire other cities and districts. Chattogram must lead by example."
He emphasised the need for continued and coordinated efforts.
"Many cities lack the resources that Chattogram possesses. Therefore, all institutions must rise to the occasion and demonstrate their capacity, with strong support from civil society," he added.
Also present at the meeting on waterlogging and the development of the Oxygen–Hathazari Highway were Road Transport and Bridges Advisor Muhammad Fawzul Kabir Khan, Education Advisor C R Abrar, Fisheries and Livestock Advisor Farida Akhtar, Health Advisor Nurjahan Begum, Liberation War Affairs Advisor Faruk-e-Azam, Special Envoy of the Chief Advisor Lutfe Siddiqui, BIDA representative Chowdhury Ashiq Mahmud Bin Harun, and SDG Affairs Chief Coordinator Lamia Morshed, among others.
