Ex-Swechchhasebak Dal leader shot dead, Jubo Dal activist injured near Bashundhara City
The shooting took place around 8:40pm behind the shopping mall near the Tejturi Bazar area on the Kazipara-Green Road.
Azizur Rahman Musabbir, former general secretary of Dhaka Metropolitan North Swechchhasebak Dal, affiliated wing of BNP, was shot dead by unidentified assailants near the Bashundhara City Shopping Complex area in Dhaka tonight (7 January).
Another man, identified as Abu Sufian, a Jubo Dal activist and general secretary of the Tejgaon Thana Van Workers' Union, sustained bullet injuries in the attack.
The shooting took place around 8:40pm behind the complex near the Tejturi Bazar area on the Kazipara-Green Road.
Confirming the incident, Fazlul Karim, additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of Tejgaon Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said two people were shot in an alley next to Star Kabab in Karwan Bazar.
"Musabbir died at a private hospital in Panthapath from a gunshot wound to his abdomen."
According to DMP, they were initially taken to BRB Hospital and later Abu Sufian shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital
Assailants fired five rounds at Musabbir, police sources said.
Following the shooting incident at Karwan Bazar, a group of people blocked the Saarc Fountain intersection, bringing traffic to a halt. Around 10:30pm, the army arrived, dispersed the protesters, and cleared the road.
However, the demonstrators later returned to the streets, prompting the army and police to surround them while allowing vehicles to pass cautiously during the protest.
CCTV footage shows two assailants sitting with a sack in an alley behind Star Kabab. As soon as they spotted Musabbir, they pulled a pistol from the sack and shot him from behind. He collapsed to the ground, then got up and tried to flee. During the chaos, Musabbir dropped his phone, and the shooters fled with the phone.
Eyewitnesses reported that the shooting occurred in front of Karwan Bazar Star Kabab, when assailants opened fire.
Rorhul Amin, a local resident, recalled knowing Musabbir from years ago.
"I used to live in Kazipara on Garden Road, beside Bashundhara City, in 2007. Musabbir was a young man then," he said.
He went on to say, "The last time I saw him was in late 2023 ahead of a BNP programme. I always knew him as an activist. I don't know what role he played after 5 August. Today, he has been shot dead."
