Six killed in separate road accidents across Chattogram
Two school students and a construction worker were among them
Six people were killed in separate road accidents across different upazilas of Chattogram yesterday (6 January), police and highway sources said.
In Rangunia, two school students died after a passenger bus hit their motorcycle at Taktarpool around 9:00 pm. One of them died on the spot, while the other succumbed to injuries at a hospital around midnight.
The deceased were identified as Abu Sufian Arman, 18, and Md Akib, 16. Arman was a Class IX student of Dhamairhat Hazrat Shah Sufi Saleh Ahmad Sunniya Madrasa, while Akib studied in Class IX at Rajabhuban High School.
According to witnesses, the motorcycle was coming from the west side of the Kaptai road when it collided head-on with a Shyamoli Paribahan bus approaching from the opposite direction. The motorcycle was badly mangled, while the bus veered off and got stuck on the roadside.
Rangunia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Arman Hossain said Arman's body was recovered from the spot, while Akib died later at Chattogram Medical College Hospital. The vehicles involved have been seized and legal proceedings are underway.
In Sitakunda, three pedestrians were killed in three separate incidents on the Dhaka–Chattogram highway.
Bar Aulia Highway Police Station OC Md Jasim said an unidentified vehicle ran over Md Mostafizur Rahman, 50, at Sultana Mandir area of Bashbaria union, leaving him critically injured. He was declared dead after being taken to the hospital.
Later in the afternoon, Abu Taher was killed on the spot at Hatilota village in Barabkunda union while trying to cross the highway after being hit by another unidentified vehicle.
Earlier, on Monday morning, Mohammad Afzal, 28, was seriously injured after being hit by an unidentified vehicle at the Bottala area of the municipal town. He died at Chattogram Medical College Hospital around 8:00am yesterday (6 January).
Kumira Highway Police said none of the vehicles involved in the three Sitakunda incidents could be seized yet.
In Lohagara, a construction worker was killed in a head-on collision between a motorcycle and a goods-laden trolley on the Chattogram–Cox's Bazar highway at around 9:30am.
The deceased, Rezaul Karim, 45, hailed from Moulvi Para of Chakaria municipality. He was a father of two.
Witnesses said the motorcycle, heading towards Cox's Bazar, attempted to overtake a passenger bus when it collided with the oncoming trolley at Sikder Dighi Par area of Padua union. Rezaul, who was riding pillion, was thrown off the bike and fatally injured.
The trolley driver attempted to flee through an internal road but abandoned the vehicle and escaped after locals chased him.
Dohazari Highway Police Sub-Inspector Ruhul Amin said the body was recovered and handed over to the family after legal formalities. The trolley has been seized, and further legal action is being taken.
Police said most vehicles involved in the accidents are yet to be identified or detained, and investigations are ongoing.
