Mehedy Sajeeb has stepped down as joint convener of the newly formed student organisation "Bangladesh Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad", alleging that the group is being dominated by a rising new fascist mentality centred around Dhaka and Dhaka University.

The announcement came hours after the resignation of Senior Joint Member Secretary Rifat Rashid.

In his official Facebook post today (27 February), Sajeeb wrote, "Today, my name was announced as a joint convener in the central committee of the Bangladesh Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad.

"I refuse to be part of this platform in protest against the rising new fascist mindset cantred around Dhaka and Dhaka University under the guise of a new political arrangement," he added.

Sajeeb further said, "The central leadership attempted to reach out to me several times through an intermediary, but none of them deemed it necessary to contact me directly. Last night, however, I had already made my stance clear that I would not be part of this student organisation."

"Yet today, at a press conference, my name was announced without my consent. I strongly condemn this attempt to include me in the organisation against my will," he said.

He also said, "As long as the members of this organisation do not break free from their Dhaka and DU-centric fascist mentality and focus on decentralisation, I will not engage in any political understanding with them. Therefore, I am resigning from this position."

Sajeeb announced that he will provide further details in a press conference tomorrow at 11am at Rajshahi University's Paribahan Chattar area.

Earlier in the day, Senior joint member secretary Rifat Rashid resigned from the newly formed student organisation, just one day after its launch, citing personal reasons.

The organisation's convener Abu Baker Majumder made the disclosure during a press conference at Dhaka University's Madhur Canteen this afternoon.

Besides, a 205-member central committee has been announced today.

A section of July uprising leaders and former coordinators of Students Against Discrimination (SAD) launched a new student organisation, Bangladesh Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad yesterday, amid protests by private university students who claim they were overlooked for posts in its committee.

However, tensions quickly escalated when clashes erupted between DU and private university students at the Madhur Canteen, Mall Chattar, and DU Central Library areas over the issue of posts.

At least 10 people were injured in the incident, including a female student.
