About 2.31 lakh chicken eggs imported from India came through the Benapole Land Port in Jashore today (9 September).

This is the first consignment of egg imports from India through Benapole this year. Earlier in November 2023, a total of 61,950 pieces of Indian eggs entered the land port.

Masudur Rahman, revenue officer at Benapole Custom House, said the eggs will get clearance after inspection as soon as possible.

According to the invoice, the total cost of the imported eggs was $11,272 and each dozen eggs cost $0.56. That means each egg cost Tk5 and after addition of 33% customs duty the import cost stands at roughly Tk7 per egg.

The import comes at a time when prices of eggs are high in the country due to supply shortages following the recent flood that devastated 11 districts.

Eggs were sold at Tk160 per dozen at retail markets of the capital last Friday.
